Maleficent excitement

We all know the fairytale of Sleeping Beauty; the beautiful princess, cursed from birth, doomed to an ageless sleep, only to awake with a kiss from her true love. The classic 1959 Disney animation confirmed Princess Aurora to be the quintessential princess for girls to admire. However my fascination always lay in the scorned fairy Maleficent. In May this year, audiences will learn the story of the iconic Disney villain, in the live-action film Maleficent, produced by Walt Disney Studios, starring Angelina Jolie in the lead role. It's turning out to be one of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year.

Personally, though intrigued to know the backstory of this character, I'm mainly curious about the aesthetics about the film itself. From the trailers and stills that have been released already it's clear to see that director Robert Stromberg has kept the dark themes of the original story. I've been pouring over images of Angelina Jolie in full costume and makeup, created by Oscar nominated costume designer Anna B Sheppard, and Academy Award winning makeup artist Rick Baker. It seems the look of the character is creating a lot of excitement at the moment, with designers and cosmetic companies creating collections inspired by the upcoming film.

Stella McCartney has created a capsule collection for her Kids line, ranging from princess dresses, to edgy t-shirts, to a mini Maleficent dress. Daniel-Phillip Belevitch of the jewellery brand Crow's Nest has created a seven-piece collection featuring dramatic and beautiful pieces with motifs of horns, thorns, fire, feathers and dragons. The showstopper of the collection being an incredible black rhodium cuff in the shape and style of Maleficent's horns, which are wonderful, if you have a spare £3,500 hanging around. Luckily some of the inspirations are affordable, such as the upcoming MAC collection, created in collaboration with Rick Baker, the film's makeup artist. The collection will include a bold red lipstick (the same shade as Jolie's lip colour in the film) named 'True Love's Kiss', which should retain at around £9.99. Also included are nude, red and black nail polish shades, and a selection of false eyelashes. The collection is set to come out at the beginning of June. So there's lots to look forward to about this film, hopefully more designers and cosmetic companies can find inspiration in this film because this is a look I can get on board with (albeit toned down slightly).
